Roe was born and raised in Somerset, Virginia, in Orange County and attended local schools. Dee and Roe met 40 years ago and courted while he was at the University of Virginia and she at Mary Baldwin College.
The two, purchased the land where Reynard Florence is located shortly after they were married in 1976. Roe and Dee built their house in 1980 which overlooks the vineyard today. The couple raised their two sons, Tom and Neville, who attended local schools.
Instilled with a firm belief in maximizing the land's potential, Roe and Dee began planning a vineyard on the land where they had built their lives. Roe and Dee attended Piedmont Virginia Community College's initial enology and viticulture programs,. Graduating in 2006, they both hold certificates in Enology and Viticulture.
Believing that good wine starts in the vineyard, Roe drew from his experience in the building business and skill as a carpenter in planning the vineyard’s design. A high cordon wire to minimize frost, proper spacing for optimal growth, and high, layered guide wires that maximize sunlight and canopy management are all examples of the craftsmanship you'll find at Reynard Florence.
Ti Rey is our Vineyard Corgi and professional greeter in the tasting room. If you bring a picnic, he is sure to be your best friend during your visit here. On most days you can find him lounging around on the property or keeping the deer and pests out of the Vineyard.
